A key clanked in the deadbolt lock. Lauren and Tara wrapped their trembling arms around each other. Monster, as they now called him, strutted in, giving them a smug smile. His handsome features contradicted the ugliness that dwelled within.

“Hello again, ladies.” With his looks and velvety voice, any unknowing person could be drawn in by his charm. It affected Lauren until she knew better. He held up a paper bag and said, “See, I brought you food, just like I promised. I hope you like burgers and fries. Personally, I never eat the stuff.” He patted his stomach. “That’s how I stay so trim.”

Lauren glared at him. “What’s going to happen to us? Wh-where are we?”

Lauren released her hold on Tara. The young woman dropped to the floor and curled into a ball, too scared even to look up at him.

More angry than frightened, Lauren put her hands on her hips and stood inches away from him. “Answer me! What are you going to do with us?”

“I think you know. You are both a liability to me, which makes you both expendable, unnecessary.”

“Let us go. We won’t say anything. You can leave the country and go wherever you want. We’ll stay quiet.”

“For how long? No, that’s not acceptable.” He walked over to them carrying the take-out bag. The scent of fast food almost made Lauren queasy. He reached in and pulled out the wrapped burgers and when they refused to take them, he set them down on the floor. “Have it your way, ladies. Eat later then.”

Monster squatted down close to Tara and pushed the pink section of raven hair from her eyes, knocking his knuckle against her cat-eye frames. She recoiled and scooted over behind Lauren, whimpering.

“Leave her alone!” Lauren shouted.

“What is wrong with you, Tara?” he said. “Why are you always so skittish? The first time we met, you acted like a scared rabbit.” His smirk stayed present even as he stood up. “Well, I must go, ladies. I just stopped by with your dinner and to make sure you two are behaving yourselves.” He glanced from one to the other and added, “You’ll have company soon.”

“You’re talking about Isabella, aren’t you?” Lauren said.

He exhaled loudly. “She’s trouble. Just like her sister.”

Lauren shook her fists at him. “You make me so, so—” She leaned forward and spit on his shirtfront. His backhanded slap made stars flash before her eyes. She stumbled backwards and hit her head against the wall. He lunged forward, pressing against her. She had no mobility, no way to break free. His hand braced her head like a vice, squeezing tightly, digging into her jaw.

“You don’t want to make me angry. I’ve been polite so far, but you’re pushing your luck, Lauren.”

He walked back to stand near where Tara remained on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. He bumped her leg with the toe of his shoe. “Hang in there, kid. This will be over soon.”

He turned his back to them and walked toward the door.
